As the world focused on Ukraine and Russia, China loomed even larger as the chief supporter of Putin, making many think China may be signaling its intention to take Taiwan following Putin’s lead. Meanwhile the US and China are jostling for influence and military superiority in the Indo-Pacific region. Beijing will host a major quinquennial party congress in the fall, as the domestic economy slows under multiple influences, including COVID. He served in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations on the national security council, responsible for China and Asia.
